One of The Greatest Things The Western Comics Market Has Produced |
The Goon is an American Comic written by Eric Powell and published under Dark Horse Comics. Powell, who had worked on various other comics beforehand, began The Goon in 1999, and since then it has gathered a cult-like fanbase, won five Eisner Awards, and currently has a CGI film in production. Basically this comic is the shit, and if you don't like it I hate you, you're a gay queermo fag, go die quietly somewhere.
The Goon tells the story of the title character, a large, muscle-bound enforcer supposedly working as the big gun for the elusive Labrazio mafia family, along with his stumpy and abrasive sidekick Franky. The Goon primary job being collecting debts owed and making sure that his, uhh, Labrazio's turf isn't being invaded by the likes of the series first primary villain, The Nameless Man, The Zombie Priest, who as his name would suggest has the magical ability to reincarnate corpses into his zombie mafia. The Goon really does branch out into really cool directions from this main idea later on.
Eric Powell's writing in The Goon is constantly on the change. It goes from the pool of emotional character development that is The Chinatown issue, to the dirty humor of Satan's Sodomy Baby, to theslap-stick humor of The Christmas special. And by the issue Eric Powell can switch seamlessly between all these writing styles to create an extremely enjoyable comic.
