When thrown at the enemy, the tines wrap together to form a seamless piercing object. A Spear of Longinus is capable of piercing the active, unneutralized A.T. Field of any Angel or Evangelion Unit, entirely by itself.
Seele managed to artificially replicate Spears of Longinus, which are wielded by the Mass Production Evangelion models: they are smaller in size, gray in color and are disguised as broad blade weapons. They appear to share the same properties as the original red model(s), though it is unknown if they possess the same level of firepower.
There were 2 Spears of Longinus present during the moment of First Impact, 3.5 billion years prior to the NGE storyline: one contained in the "White Moon" (Adam's sanctuary) and one contained in the invading "Black Moon" (Lilith's sanctuary). The "Black Moon" Spear was destroyed in the First Impact event, and Adam's attempt at rebuking Lilith's arrival triggered its own Spear to retaliate by piercing it and incapacitating it.
