Getter Robo OBD
GETTA BIMU!

Background Information

Getter Robo is a super robot manga series created by Ken Ishikawa, who had previously worked with Go Nagai while producing Mazinger. An anime series was produced by TOEI Animation and broadcast on Fuji TV from 1974 to 1975. Contrary to popular belief, Ken Ishikawa is mostly responsible for the series, as opposed to Go Nagai whose involvement was minimal. The entirety of the original manga and five manga sequels were drawn and written almost solely by Ken Ishikawa up until his death - Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, Getter Robo Go, Shin Getter Robo and Getter Robo Ah. Was a large inspiration for combining and transforming mecha series to come after it and is credited as the main inspiration for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Canonicity

Almost everything regarding the manga version of Getter Robo is its “real” canon; its the source material and stories like Getter Robo Go, G, Shin Getter Robo, are by its main author/mangaka, creator, and artist; Ken Ishikawa. All 5 original manga stories are directly connected to each other in the same continuity in some fashion. Several of the manga stories by Ishikawa take place in different worlds or realities, though not all of them; which is strongly suggested even differing stories in different worlds for the anime or manga stories take place in the same continuity/multiverse. The various adaptations/spinoffs are not strictly non-canon but rather secondary canon supplementing Ken Ishikawa's, usually featuring the same characters but in different storylines and settings. The manga not by Ken Ishikawa, like Go Nagai's Devilman vs Getter Robo and Getter Robo Darkness are considered secondary canon. Getter Robo Hien by Naoto Tsushima is apparently based on the notes left by Ken Ishikawa after his death.

Standing in the Battledome

Getter Robo is a powerful verse, featuring super robots powered by Getter Rays, from which Spiral Energy was based on. Casual planetbusters are not out of place in the series and in Armageddon the final battle reached out to the edge of the solar system where a massive dimensional rift swallowed Pluto, and Shin Dragon's full Shine Spark might have left a giant hole in the galaxy. Getter Emperor exceeded the energy to bring about a Big Bang simply from transforming and an advanced alien race with the ability to move through dimensions and time travel believed it would destroy the universe if it continued evolving and empowering itself. They also attempted to time travel in the past to stop it and it thwarted their efforts. Forced evolution, time travel, regeneration (of mech and pilot), forcefields, and illusion creation are some of the abilities featured in the verse.
