Background information

Negima! Magister Negi Magi aka Mahou Sensei Negima! is a completed shonen series with 38 volumes created by Ken Akamatsu (creator of Love Hina).

It focuses on Negi Springfield, a mage and child teacher assigned to teach a class of 31 middle school girls. Akamatsu originally wanted to do a traditional shounen, but his editors forced him to make the kind of ecchi/harem series he was most well-known for. However, after several volumes he managed to break out of their constraints and turn it into more of a fighting shounen.

Negima! Magister Negi Magi should not be confused with Negima!? NEO, a non-canon second anime remake about searching for Star Crystal which makes absolutely no sense and is not associated with the manga in any possible way. Then again, there is also Negiho (Ito) Bun which seems to be a rip-off of Hanamaru Kindergarten, where Negi appears to be around 20 years old and his students are little kids.

It also has an ongoing sequel known as UQ Holder.

Standing in the Battledome

Negima's fighting powers are primarily based around magic, although there are also ki based attacks, ninja techniques, Shinmeiryuu swordsmanship, advanced futuristic technologies, robots/mechas, magic world armies, and pure physical hand-to-hand combat.

The verse has several city level+/at least city level+ and recently even stronger characters with massively hypersonic+ speeds, and including its hax abilities and spells, it is stronger than the likes of Yu Yu Hakusho and the Power 6, as it has a planetary level spell that can engulf an entire planet and return everything into nothing, time/space magic and technology, and broken abilities and artifacts that can warp reality.

Unlike other mangas, Negima is usually backed up by "Lexicon Negimarium", a canonical interpretation of various concepts, abilities, and references. It is also backed up by the "3-D background explanation corner" which states the actual sizes particular locations and backgrounds.

Both of these back ups can be found on the back of the official release of the manga (something more authors should think about doing, since it makes it harder to wank the series, leaves less room for shitty speculation, and expands upon the setting. It also makes it harder to downplay the series).

Other information

Endless Mike has made a summary of the early (aka shitty; implying Negima has any others) volumes of the manga, collecting important and relevant information and plot details that a reader will need to know later (although it is still better to grit your teeth and read them yourself, for obvious reasons; still, this is a good idea for those who can't or won't do that). The intent is for prospective new readers to simply read his summary instead of forcing themselves through the early volumes, you can find it here

As for UQ Holder, it is also known as Unquality Holder in the OBD. :skully

It is considered as laughable as its predecessor (it's actually moreso right now) and will eventually be used as yet another Method of Test for more quality fictions. :skully

Such is the will of the hivemind. :starscreamsmirk

Note

Negima has a general "love-hate" relationship dividing many in the OBD.

The hate is for the fact that the majority of the early portions of the series is very heavily fanservice based with its gag humor (repeated panty shots, catgirls, implied incest, Akamatsu generally being terrible in general at comedy) versus its more serious and battle focused and plot-centric latter portions.

As one can tell, its a hot bed of discussion.

Also, Endless Mike being constantly victimized for having a Chachamaru fetish will never stop. Ever.

As you could probably tell after just seeing this page, when the series ended there was much, much rejoicing by it's detractors in the OBD.....

......But then it was announced that the series could continue for possibly 100 more volumes. When news reached those that were in peace after it's ending........ well...
