|The primary JLA members of the DCAU
Short for "DC Animated Universe", the DCAU is a series of cartoons based on DC Comics. The DCAU is a separate continuity from the comics, but is owned by the same company. Several characters (such as Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya) debuted in the DCAU and later became part of the comics as well.
The DCAU does not comprise every DC Comics-based cartoon, but only a certain amount of such which are canon to each other. It is also sometimes known as the Timmverse or Diniverse (after producers and writers Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, respectively).
The DCAU consists of the TV series:
Batman, the Animated Series (widely considered to be one of the best cartoons of all time)
Superman, the Animated Series
The New Batman/Superman Adventures
The Zeta Project
Justice League Unlimited
As well as the animated movies:
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Batman and Mr. Freeze: SubZero
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
There are also comic books and video games based on the DCAU, but their canonicity is questionable. Newer DC animated stuff like Superman: Doomsday, The Batman, and Legion of Super-Heroes are not canon to the DCAU, and have no connection to the DCAU.
Standing in the Battledome
For the most part, the DCAU characters are weaker than their comic book counterparts. One notable exception is AMAZO, an android that can copy the powers of anyone he looks at, and has absorbed the power of the Warlogog is arguably superior.
