Background Information
To Aru Majutsu no Index is set in Academy City, a technologically advanced academic city located at western Tokyo, which studies scientifically enhanced superhuman students who developed powers, known as ESPers. However, within this world of scientifically developed superabilities, there exists an underground world of magic and occults connected to the religious institutions of the planet. Kamijou Touma, an unlucky boy who happens to be one of the many students within Academy City, possess a mysterious power in his right hand known as the "Imagine Breaker", an ability which allows him to negate all forms of supernatural powers, whether they be magical or psychic. One day, he finds a young girl hanging on his balcony railing named Index. She is a nun from Necessarius, a secret magic branch of the Church of England, and her mind has been implanted with the Index Librorum Prohibitorum—103,000 forbidden magical books the Church has removed from circulation. His encounter with her leads him to meet others from the secret world of science and magic. Touma's unusual power places him at the center of conflicts relating magicians and science-based espers in Academy City. As Touma tries to help and protect his friends, he learns the people he knows are not as they appear and begins to attract the attention of magicians and espers alike as they try to unravel the secrets of Academy City and Index. It's also terribly written by a writer who can't into physics and has tons of lolis
Warning:
You might hear supporters of the series talk about how the "haters" haven't really read what they're criticizing, or how it actually gets better later on. Yours truly and Raidou can say with resounding confidence that's not the case in the slightest. We've actually compared and contrasted the level of quality in writing between the early volumes and the latest, and the result hasn't at all changed. Beyond the excess lolis (and the terrible fanservice that accompanies them) and bad physics is the fucking prose which is composed of some of the most god awful writing this one has had the displeasure of reading. From beginning to end his style of writing consists of not having any particular voice in mind to keep the reader interested, awkwardly phrased metaphors, and heaps of PIS to protect a protagonist that experiences absolutely no change throughout the course of the series.
B..b..b...bu...but what about supporting characters, Judas?!
Don't worry about them, cause Kamachi sure as hell doesn't. The man has an instinctive propensity for tossing anyone remotely interesting to the wayside to focus on Touma and anyone else he converts to his fucking cult.
This novel series is not as cool and deep as it or its fans set out to be.

Standing in the Battledome
While the universe has a lot of hax, it should be noted that many characters in the series lack speed (although there are a couple characters with speed of light and relativistic attacks and defenses) and some characters suffer from being glass cannons. Even with those limitations, there are at least 2.3 million espers, technology such as advanced powersuits, orbital satellite lasers with more power than a nuke, and fighter jets that can fly at mach 6; Not only that, the Magic side is even more powerful, having reality warping, magical beings such as archangels capable of island busting and controlling every celestial body in the solar system, and much more. As for how strong the characters from the verse are; some characters range from far below Narutoverse level, while some high tiers could solo the Holy Shonen Trinity, and top tiers could solo much stronger fictions.
After the wanking displayed after Luke Skywalker (Legends) vs Toaru the series has become the method of test for higher-end fictions.

Key Terms
- An Involuntary Movement (AIM): AIM Is a term used to refer to the phenomenon in which an esper involuntarily produces an invisible energy field, and essentially describes the area of influence of an esper's ability. The AIM dispersal field has been a main focus in most stories on the Science side; it also plays heavily in Aleister Crowley's plans. In itself, AIM is relatively harmless as it cannot be detected by regular humans; however, under certain circumstances, AIM is capable of expressing anti-magic properties.
- Telesma: Telesma is an Angel's equivalent of Mana. It can have highly dangerous effects on the real world, such as causing large tidal waves. However, there are some people who can control telesma, like Birdway, God's Right Seat, as well as both of the characters who use Curtana.
- Mana: Mana is the energy that allows magicians to use magic. Mana exists in all forms of life, not just magicians, although they are the only ones who use it. It has been explicitly stated one method of creating mana is by processing a person's inner lifeforce, similar to how crude oil is refined into other substances.
- Grimoire: This term refers to a book containing knowledge about magic. They are considered to be powerful tools with esoteric knoweldge and powerful magic spells written in them. They are harmful both physically and mentally to all who dare read their contents, although, currently, only Index is immune to the debilitating effects of the grimoires, and with her perfect memory, allows her to serve as the vessel of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Grimoires are seemingly sentient enough to disclose its contents to people who desire information from it. Grimoires can apparently identify whether someone was a "reader" or "not a reader", and have the tendency to cooperate with those who would propagate the information with their contents.
