Performance: Massively hypersonic (the maximum speed for an asteroid orbiting the Sun at the distance of Earth is around Mach 134, and due to the acceleration of Earth's gravity, the minimum speed of an asteroid hitting Earth's atmosphere is Mach 33.7. If an asteroid came from outside the solar system (one that isn't orbiting the sun) it could hit Earth at much greater speed than the maximum for an orbital asteroid. However, no known asteroids of this type have been detected. Comets from out in the Kupier belt can achieve velocities up to Mach 217)
