Pretty bad ass if you ask me

Background Information

Like gratuitous blood and violence, tittyz maybe? Then this is for you. Gantz is the brain child of Oku Hiroya. It is set in modern - day Japan. The plot centers around two high school boys who died in a grisly train accident. Instead of going to hell/heaven/afterlife/wal-mart they appear in a room with a black ball with a man inside. From there shit hits the fan. They're meant to fight aliens using super advanced technology. But most often than not they die horrible horrible entertaining deaths. It's all like a game, if you play and don't die you get points. Get 100 points and you can either go home, get a super weapon or reincarnate a dead comrade. It's a pretty solid series if you get past the gore, horrible deaths (even main characters die) and overly long waiting periods between scans. As an added bonus they have several nubile female characters in skin tight suits. And fanservice, lots of that.

Standing in the Battledome

From a battle point of view they're mid-low tier for named characters. Barring the various monsters you meet up the main cast is usually dependent on their suits and tech for survival. Though later a race of giant 4-eyed humanoid aliens with advanced technology is introduced threatening Earth and casually nuking main cities.

The author has a thing for introducing characters who look like real life celebrities, like George Clooney, a sword wielding Chiaki Yuriyama (of Kill Bill fame), the main character losing his virginity to Angelina Jolie, and even a giant Danny Trejo alien.
