Background Information
Busou Renkin is is a completed shonen manga series with 10 volumes created by Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator of Rurouni Kenshin.
The title translates approximately to "armed alchemy". The series is, as you guessed, about alchemy, although it focuses more on flashy battles and powers than FMA (another alchemy based manga) tends to do.
The manga was canceled before it was completed, so the anime had to improvise an ending, which was actually pretty good.
It probably makes the canon version a little iffy though, so it would probably be up to the OP if they want to treat the anime ending as canon.
Standing in the Battledome
As a verse, Busou Renkin is overall weaker than the HST.
