Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeta

Background Information

Beginning with the original anime series' debut, Mobile Suit Gundam, in 1979, more than thirty years of time has been spent with expanding its universe with a hoard of media set in its timeline. This includes multiple tv series, OVAs, movies, manga, novels, and even a live action movie, which are listed below. Universal Century makes up the dominating majority of the entire franchise and the main setting of the Gundam anime metaseries.

In UC 0079, the Principality of Zeon has declared independence from the Earth Federation and subsequently launched a war of independence. The conflict has directly affected every continent on earth, also nearly every space colony and lunar settlement. Zeon, though smaller, has the tactical upper hand through their use of a new type of humanoid weapons called mobile suits. After half of all humanity perishes in the conflict, the war settled into a bitter stalemate lasting over 8 months.

The story begins with a newly deployed Federation warship, the White Base, arriving at the secret research base located at the Side 7 colony to pick up the Federation's newest weapon. However, they are closely followed by Zeon forces. A Zeon reconnaissance team member disobeys mission orders and attacks the colony, killing most of the Federation crew and civilians in the process. Out of desperation, a citizen boy named Amuro Ray accidentally finds the Federation's new arsenal, the RX-78 Gundam, and neutralizes the situation. Scrambling everything they can, the White Base sets out with her newly formed crew of civilian recruits and refugees in her journey to survive, and unknowingly, change the course of the war. Standing in the Battledome:

Universal Century is a reasonably powerful Sci-Fi verse, much like its alternate universe counterparts. Mobile Suits constructed from the special material, Luna Titanium Alloy (later renamed Gundarium in honor of the RX-78), were heavily resistant to conventional physical weaponry and even shows resilience against mega particle weaponry. The earliest type of the armor withstood 83 tons of TNT without taking damage. Mobile Suits, even at their weakest, posses city block level durability as demonstrated by the Zaku II. Beam-type weapons have energy yields ranging from hundreds of tons of TNT (i.e. Beam Gatling Gun) to the most powerful being in the gigatons (i.e. Mega Beam Cannon). One of the earliest models of a beam rifle during the OYW, reaching kilotons in firepower, could shoot through a battleship. Depending on the era within UC, Mobile Suits are equipped to deal with such weapons in a number of ways. In terms of speed, Mobile Suits range from hypersonic+ to massively hypersonic in space. Most Mobile Suits are incapable of flight while under gravity, reducing their mobility. The average max running speed ranges around 100 km/h. They can, however, still boost to hypersonic speeds with their thrusters in bursts. The more skilled pilots can react to mega particle beams traveling at relativistic speeds no matter the terrain.

Universal Century also possesses humans with superhuman powers of intuition and awareness called Newtypes. Newtypes vary in power and abilities ranging from character to character. Newtype abilities include enhanced reactions, empathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telepathy, being able to snipe things beyond the range of their mechs, being able to exist as ghosts, mind manipulation, healing, and others. Mobile Suits piloted by newtypes are often equipped with weaponry specifically catered to their abilities like remote weaponry that's controlled via thought with a Psycommu system. Psycommu systems read brainwaves and instantaneous translate them into machine code to control the weapons. Some Mobile Suits are equipped with variants of Psycommu systems, such as the Bio-Sensor, designed to channel their psychic power to amplify the abilities of their mobile suits, showcasing abilities like telekinesis and forcefields. Psycoframe, a technology that builds Psycommu into the atom-level of the metal frame of a Mobile Suit, allowing the newtype pilot to control the mobile suit as if it were his/her own body. A small amount of it was able to pull off a feat like deflecting a Mega Particle Gun. Nu Gundam's Psycoframe overloads, then fully resonates with its pilot and filled with the wills of the surrounding pilots, creates a psycho field capable of pushing back the asteroid base Axis.

Beside conventional weaponry and typical beam type technology are the super weapons during each era. Three Colony Lasers, an empty shell of an orbiting space colony converted into a large laser with island level+ firepower, make appearances in UC. The colony laser built by the Jupiter Empire, appearing in Crossbone Steel Seven, was going to shoot from Jupiter to Earth. Power is supplied by an array of solar panels, whilst a thermonuclear pulse thruster provides a limited degree of mobility. The first one burned out immediately after use due to premature firing, but the second can fire multiple times. The drawback is the slow recharging between each shots leaves it a sitting target.

Angel Halo, a gigantic psycommu fortress appearing in Victory Gundam, harnesses the power of thousands of psychickers and controlled by one single newtype in the middle key room. Newtypes were highly susceptible to the images it could project within their minds. The main purpose of the weapon was to devolve the minds of humans to an infant's. It was used in attempt to do that very thing to all the inhabitants of Earth. No outer defenses to speak of, but the armor of the fortresses shows resilience to the latest models of beam rifles during UC 153.
